Know Before You Throw.
We often don’t think about the things we throw away.
Most of us are content with the material being collected regularly at a low cost. But protecting the environment and creating a sustainable future begins with YOU… and all of us. It’s important we know where and how materials should be thrown away or recycled. We can all do our part to ensure we protect each other and our planet. Below are some simple steps to get you started. Thanks for doing your part to keep our community clean and beautiful!
-
Step 1: Recycle Right
DCSWA does not provide curbside collection of recycling. This service is coordinated through your municipality. Please contact your municipal office for such questions as:
Recycling bins
Missed pick-ups or other collection issues
In Delaware County, residents and businesses should recycle the following materials:
Glass from food and beverage bottles and jars
Plastic bottles and jugs
Metal food and beverage cans, including aluminum
Corrugated cardboard and grey board (cereal boxes, tissue boxes)
Office paper, newspaper, magazines, and junk mail
Empty and rinse out your recycles to ensure no food residue remains. Flatten cardboard and keep all fiber clean and dry (do not put this material out if it’s going to rain).
-
Step 2: Dispose of HHW Properly
Items used in the home and yard often contain hazardous materials and chemicals that should not be recycled or thrown away as you normally would. These items are called household hazardous waste (HHW) and should be properly disposed to protect people and the environment. HHW items include:
Automotive fluids
Batteries (alkaline batteries can safely be disposed of with your household trash)
Fuel sources (propane, gasoline)
Herbicides & pesticides
Mercury containing devices
Oil-Based Paint (no latex)
DCSWA coordinates several HHW collection events each year. Registration is required and residents must present a ticket to access the event.
-
Step 3: Dispose of Trash Responsibly
DCSWA does not provide curbside collection of trash. Waste collection is coordinated through your municipality. However, some residents contract directly with a waste/recycling hauler. When in doubt, please contact your municipal office for the following:
Charges and payments for trash collection
Collection dates, times, and holiday pick-up changes
Missed pick-ups and other collection issues
Disposal of large items (ex: mattresses and furniture.
Remember to separate your recyclables and place in a separate recycling bin that’s clearly marked as such. It’s also critical to NOT put household hazardous waste in your trash, including items that could cause harm to collection workers or damage collection vehicles and processing equipment.
Contact your municipal office with any questions regarding special waste (ex: large items, furniture, tires, yard waste, etc.).
